ICAART 2024

Recently the discussion on whether AI systems can become aware or conscious has been heating up. The topic has been active on the margins of AI for a long time (see Journal of Machine Consciousness, early work of Antonio Chella, Ricardo Sanz, a.o.) but now there is increased work and interest, stimulated by increased funding, such as from the Awareness Inside Portfolio of projects in the EU Pathfinder program. In addition, consciousness is attributed to Large Language Models, raising further questions about what consciousness is and what it is for.
The special session is organised as part of the 16th ICAART (International Conference on Agents and Artificial Intelligence) to be held in Rome 24-26 february 2024.
